"Milton Berle (age 67 when this interview was recorded) has a brutally honest discussion with David Susskind about the tragedies, regrets and triumphs he experienced over a 60+ year career. (At the time, Berle was on a book promotion tour.) While almost teary-eyed, Milton recalls how his dear mother, Sarah, propelled him into a successful career, but also smothered his personal life lest he become unfocused times were tough (his family was evicted on more than one occasion) and Milton, their main breadwinner, was all that stood between his family and starvation at times. During this point, Berle gazes out as if his life was unfolding before him, watching himself carry that heavy burden starting a the tender age of five; an unfathomable thought at that point in his life. There is some talk of show business glamour and wild escapades, but Mr. Television speaks mainly of his own family wives and children and of this parents and siblings. Most noticeable is how he owes his entire life, entire existence to Sarah. (When Susskind alludes to Sadies ways, Milton defends her.) She had become mythical in her sons eyes."
