Though she finally found breakthrough success with her 1989 Grammy winner Nick of Time, singer-guitarist Bonnie Raitt emerged from the early-1970s folk-blues scene with a soulful sound that mixed those genres with her own brand of rootsy country-rock. This program finds a pre-Nick of Time Raitt performing at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival in support of that year's Sweet Forgiveness album, which netted the singer her first hit single with a cover of Del Shannon's Runaway. Raitt's smolderingly bluesy performance highlights that song and a selection of tunes from her first six albums - including Under the Falling Sky, Women Be Wise, Sugar Mama, and Love Me Like a Man - for a revealing glimpse of a consummate artist whose star was still on the rise.
