"Meredith Monk is a true Renaissance woman: a composer, singer, director, choreographer and creator of new opera, music theater, films and installations. Meredith Monk: Inner Voice is a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at this dynamic and sometimes mysterious performer. Following her as she creates a new piece entitled Songs of Ascension, this new documentary illuminates the artist at work, while also revealing her compelling personal history. As the film unfolds, it chronicles Songs as it flowers from observations made in solitude, to rehearsals and workshops, and finally to performances with members of her Vocal Ensemble. Even at the performance stage, Monk continues to transform the piece by striving for a balance between discipline and freedom, while remaining open to impermanence and change key facets of the Zen Buddhism at the core of her art.
